Education, Bildung, is the bringing forth of what is yet to be seen, yet to be spoken: an ongoing search for what will remain, and, in this, a constant becoming. Education gives sense, gives agency, gives the capacity for encounter.
The EGS is itself a community in becoming that forms through cross-disciplinary inquiry and through creative practices that explore the very conditions of social and political meaning. It is a space dedicated to the deepest sense of academic freedom, a space where teachers and students can undertake to faire profession in the untrammelled speech that Jacques Derrida imagined for a “university without condition.” The EGS thus seeks a renewed and genuine “professionalism” through its singular forms of thinking and doing, its many forms of poiesis. In this process, it is becoming one of the most prominent teaching centers in the world, challenging both its students and teachers with the task of discovering what a university can be.
The Division of Arts, Health & Society (AHS) offers a comprehensive range of graduate study programs with degrees in Expressive Arts, Therapy, Education, Coaching, Consulting, Conflict Transformation, and Peace Building. Its interdisciplinary approach to teaching is grounded in the concept of poiesis—our capacity to shape the world and thereby ourselves—and is led by some of today's foremost practitioners and thinkers in the expressive arts.
The Division of Philosophy, Art & Critical Thought (PACT) brings together renowned philosophers, critical theorists, artists, and practitioners, offering seminars for students seeking a unique intellectual experience and degrees that can serve work in higher education, the arts, the media, or other cultural sectors.
