Werner Hamacher - Lectures / Workshops / Seminars

EXTERIORITY: Blanchot, Foucault, Levinas (3 credits)

Werner Hamacher

Description: This course explores 'exteriority' as a process and place where thought takes place. We will examine the radical Other in its un/relation to literature, history, and ethics. We examine these topics through a close reading of Maurice Blanchot, Michel Foucault, and Emmanuel Levinas. As we explore the spaces of relation and un/relation we move closer to a new way of thought that escapes the insulated nature of academic discourse. We will focus on the processes of relation in an attempt to escape the process of identification as a singular notion.

Objectives: Students shall leave this course with a firm grasp on the works of Blanchot, Foucault and Levinas. We will examine ethics as a relational process through the work of Emmanuel Levinas. We will examine the discursive and genealogical methodologies of Michel Foucault and attempt to generate an ethics that supersedes metaphysical restrictions. Students will be pushed to extreme heights of learning through demanding classroom interactions and intensive readings before the seminar.

Learning Outcomes: This course is designed to invite thinking. As we examine the radical Other we begin to explore the spaces of un/relation and dive into the fields of ethics and literature. This course will inform students dissertation and creative projects. Students are required to bring their own research and life experiences to the table as an essential part of the learning environment.
