CINEMA FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM: The Vocabulary of Film and Art (3 credits)

Description: This course is a departure from disenchantment with contemporary cinema. This course offers alternatives to the oversaturated popular cinematic structure of today. Through considering cinematic art in relation to new media environments we invigorate the aim and scope of cinema. We will take an approach which realizes a visual language beyond the confines of the traditional narrative. As we leave behind the linear story, we move towards a visual language that both exceeds and redefines storytelling and identification.

Objectives: Students shall become intimate with Peter Greenaway’s innovative cinematic and multimedia art. As we move through the course we will aim to delve into the depths of storytelling and its possibilities. This course is structured to inform the artisit and academic in their struggle to come to terms with meaning in the oversaturated media world we find ourselves in today. As we escape the confines of popular cinema we reinvigorate the passion for visual language and we enter a new possibility for creative and artistic possibilities.
