SOFTWARE STUDIES: The Relationship Between Software and Theory (3 Credits)

Lev Manovich, Ph.D.

Description: This course examines the relationship between software and theory. How is software architecture related to the theoretical origins of media? As we examine the role of linguistic theoretical concern in their relation to computer engineering we begin to uncover new forms of thought and innovative creative processes. We will move through the history of software and theory.

Objectives: Students shall leave this course with the theoretical background necessary for writing on software. Students will become familiar with the work of Lev Manovich. Students will be prepared to teach and write about technology and its relationship to subjectivity and new modes of thinking.
