GILLES DELEUZE: Aesthetics and a Brush with Islamic Thought. (3 credits)

Description: This course examines Deleuzian thought and theory. We will explore Deleuze through aesthetics. Bring an object that you wish to analyze: artwork, music, short movie or clip, olfactory/gustatory object, or text. With the objects the students bring we will begin to explore the relation to Deleuze that the objects induce. The course will examine Islamic thought. As we explore Islamic thought we come to see the world in new ways and enter the politics of aesthetics that take utmost importance in contemporary political and artistic works.

Objectives: Students shall leave this course with a new understanding of the connections and sights of emergence within Deleuzian theory. This course aims to inspire creative interpretations and readings of Deleuze’s work. Students will also become familiar with the groundbreaking work of Laura U. Marks. Through intensive reading and the diversity of thought amongst the unique students of the European Graduate School this course will push thinking to new levels.

Learning Outcomes: This course is designed to encourage innovative thinking and writing. Throughout the course students will gain essential theoretical background to the thinking of Deleuze and its value in contemporary debates. Students will use the material from this course in their own personal dissertation and creative projects.
