PHILOSOPHY, COMMUNITY AND ART: The Sacred Mystery of Art (3 credits)

Description: This course examines the thinking of Jean-Luc Nancy, one of the most respected philosophers of today’s world. We will examine the Sacred and its tracings throughout history. As we chase the Sacred from temple to street, to the moment of art, to the space of dreams we will begin to touch the concept of sense. We will examine the sacredness of sexuality, nature and the temple.This course will ask what is at stake in art? We will forever be grasping towards mystery.

Objectives: This course will inform students on the current thinking of Jean-Luc Nancy. Students will bring their own experience and research as we push each others thinking towards new heights. We will prepare for the ultimate task, to think a new future.

BODY, COMMUNITY AND FREEDOM: Sensing the Community (3 credits)

Description: This course deconstructs the body, the communitary experience and the notion of freedom within the context of myth, literature and Christianity. We will examine the body and sense and its relationship to sovereignty and freedom. We will examine what it means to form a community and the relationships formed within and outside of communities. This course is an in-depth analysis of Jean-Luc Nancy’s thinking and its relationship to contemporary debates in philosophy.
