Jean Baudrillard - Seminars / Workshops / Lectures

THINKING THE VIRTUAL AND THE REAL (3 credits)

Jean Baudrillard, Ph.D.

Description: This course is intended to provide students with a firm step in the thinking of Jean Baudrillard. As we approach the weighty topics of the "Virtual" and the "Real" the class approaches current critical theory and the key topics of research today. This course will take, at times, outrageous, ironic, and perhaps poetic approaches to hypermedia and photography, simulation and the real. This course examines the end of truth and the double meaning of such an end.

Objectives: This course is aimed at pushing students to levels of awareness and critical knowledge about current hypertext theory and culture that is necessary to engage in the ever changing field of media as it exists today. This course demands the highest preparation and willingness of students to forget what they once knew and imagine a new world. This course demands a strong grasp in the theoretical work of Baudrillard. We also aim to uncover the methodological concerns within academic criticism of virtualreality.

Leaning Outcomes: This course informs students who are studying postmodern culture and issues related to hypermedia and the blurring between virtuality and reality. Students whose personal research projects are related to notions of identification within the simulacrum are necessarily invited to this course as a way to inform their dissertation writing projects. Students whose work is related to art or hypermediated subjectivity will take their personal projects into this course as a mean sof engaging contemporary theoretical debates surrounding the pressing issues of current critical debates.
