HOMO SACER: A questioning of how radical subjectivity and the coming community can contribute to a paradigm of human existence (3 credits)

Giorgio Agamben, Ph.D.

Description: This course is dedicated to Agamben's philosophy. We will work through ideas of community and identity. The course will focus around the themes of solidarity in a post-identity world.

Objectives: Students shall gain a firm grasp on Agamben's philosophical texts and his position within current academic debates. Students will be expected to fully read all texts and come prepared to associate their current research within the context of Agamben's work.

Learning Outcomes: Students will have learned the major themes within Agamben's work. Students will be prepared to write critical analysis of Agamben's major works and to utilize his work for their dissertation projects. They will understand the relation between Agamben and his contemporaries as well as his historical influences. This course is essential to any student desiring an engagement with one of today's pre-eminent philosophers.
