MEDIATED ART: Anthropology and Self-Exploration (3 credits)
Cornelia Parker
Description: This course turns art into evidence by revisiting the European tradition of art as anthropology and self-exploration — in her work artifacts become case studies within a mediated culture. We will look at the themes of consumerism, globalization, and the role of the mass media in contemporary life. Through exploring the relationship between art and anthropology we will cover new grounds in thinking.
Objectives: Students shall leave this course inspired to use the material in their own personal artistic and academic careers. Our thinking will aim towards new definitions of art and human culture as we explore the pathways of art and its relationship to human culture. As we uncover the secrets of art, we move towards the future of thinking and creating media. Through working intensively with Cornelia Parker the class will move in many directions dependent on the students and their own unique life experiences.
