EUROPEAN FILMMAKERS WORKSHOP: Sexuality as Cinematic Object (3 Credits)
Catherine Breillat
Description: This course examines sexuality and its relationship to film. Through examining the work of Catherine Breillat we will begin to uncover the nature of sexuality as it is revealed through autobiographical films. This course is a way to connect feminist studies with film and opens a discussion surrounding the sexual nature of the gaze and aesthetics.
Objectives: We will explore sexuality as a subject instead of taking an objective perspective. We will begin to explore viewers confrontation with feminine sexuality. Topics will range from the adolescent obsession with the loss of virginity, female masochism, age as it relates to subjective romantic and sexual interactions. Female sexuality is seen as a potent force that is possibly being repressed and made obscene by its patriarchal bedmate. As we move through the theoretical and artistic paths that form the current architecture of sexuality, we begin to develop and question identity as it is.
Learning Outcomes: This course informs students understanding of sexuality and cinematic subjectivity. Through exploring the relationship between identity formation and the artistic process alongside the powerful role of the cinematic gaze; we begin to inform current research on the nature of sexuality and its representations. This course is aimed at both artists and academics alike, as we explore gender through film we become more informed cultural critics and cultural content creators.
